If you are searching for one of the best waterfront dining experiences in Tampa Bay, it is hard to top Sunset Bar & Grille at Little Harbor in Ruskin, Florida. Tucked away along the southern shoreline of Tampa Bay inside the resort community of Little Harbor, this laid-back waterfront restaurant combines surprisingly good food, panoramic water views, live music, and one of the most relaxing atmospheres anywhere on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Whether you are arriving by car or pulling in by boat, Sunset Grill delivers the kind of Old Florida waterfront experience that keeps people coming back again and again.

The first thing that immediately stands out about Sunset Grille is the setting itself. The restaurant overlooks Tampa Bay with sweeping views stretching across the water toward the downtown St. Petersburg skyline. On a clear afternoon or evening, you can sit outside on the deck and literally watch massive cruise ships slowly moving in and out of the Port of Tampa in the distance. It creates an atmosphere that feels almost cinematic at sunset, especially when the sky turns orange and pink and reflects across the bay. Few restaurants in the Tampa Bay area combine waterfront dining with this kind of expansive view.

Little Harbor itself is one of Tampa Bay’s hidden gems. Located in Ruskin on the eastern side of the bay, the area has quietly developed into a waterfront destination for boating, fishing, kayaking, jet skiing, paddleboarding, beach lounging, and weekend staycations. Visitors can rent boats, walk along the marina, stay in waterfront condos, enjoy live entertainment, or simply spend the day soaking in the coastal atmosphere. It has a relaxed island-style energy that feels far removed from the traffic and pace of Tampa, even though it is only about an hour away. The small beach area near the restaurant gives the entire property a true vacation feel.

As beautiful as the views are, the food is what makes Sunset Grille worth recommending. During our visit, the standout dishes were unquestionably the club sandwich, the fish tacos, and the fried green tomatoes appetizer.

The fried green tomatoes arrived first, and they were exceptional. Crispy on the outside with perfectly tender green tomato slices inside, they had just the right amount of seasoning and crunch without feeling greasy or heavy. The remoulade drizzle added a creamy tangy kick that elevated the entire dish. Fried green tomatoes can often feel like an afterthought at many waterfront restaurants, but these tasted fresh, carefully prepared, and genuinely memorable. It was the perfect appetizer to share while enjoying drinks and watching boats move across the marina.

The fish tacos were another highlight and honestly some of the better seafood tacos you will find anywhere around Tampa Bay. The tacos featured fresh blackened mahi with a flavorful cabbage-lime slaw, pico de gallo, avocado, and a drizzle of sriracha aioli that added just enough heat without overpowering the fish. The balance of textures worked perfectly. Every bite had freshness, brightness, and that unmistakable coastal Florida flavor profile that people search for when dining on the water. The mahi tasted fresh and flaky, not overly seasoned or buried under heavy sauces. These are the kind of fish tacos you think about days later.

And let it be known, matey, these tacos were so good a hungry pirate would mutiny for the last one and toss his first mate overboard without a second thought.

Surprisingly, one of the biggest standouts of the entire meal was the turkey club sandwich. Waterfront restaurants are usually known for seafood, but this club sandwich absolutely deserves attention. Built on thick Texas toast and layered generously with turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and sriracha aioli, it was fresh, flavorful, and substantial without being overly heavy. The bacon added a smoky crunch while the aioli gave the sandwich a modern twist that separated it from a standard club sandwich. Paired with fries and enjoyed outside overlooking Tampa Bay, it was comfort food done extremely well.

A salty old captain at the next table growled that the club sandwich “could calm a storm and make a pirate forget where he buried the gold,” and honestly, he may have been right.

One of the things that makes Sunset Bar & Grille at Little Harbor unique is that it does not try too hard to be upscale or pretentious. Instead, it embraces what people actually want from waterfront Florida dining: good food, cold drinks, live music, sunset views, and a relaxed atmosphere where you can unwind for hours. The casual vibe works perfectly with the marina surroundings and beach setting.

The restaurant also benefits from constant activity around Little Harbor. Throughout the day you will see fishing boats, sailboats, kayakers, paddleboarders, jet skis, and visitors walking along the waterfront. As evening approaches, the energy shifts into a true sunset crowd with people gathering on the deck to watch the changing colors over Tampa Bay. It becomes easy to understand why so many locals quietly consider this one of the best hidden waterfront restaurants in the region.

Another underrated aspect of the experience is how accessible the location feels compared to many of Tampa Bay’s more crowded waterfront destinations. While places in downtown Tampa, Clearwater Beach, or St. Pete Beach can become overwhelming with traffic and tourists, Little Harbor still feels relatively undiscovered. That hidden-gem quality adds tremendously to the appeal. You can spend an afternoon at the marina, grab drinks by the water, watch dolphins occasionally surface in the bay, and then settle into dinner while the skyline of downtown St. Petersburg glows in the distance.

The live music schedule also adds to the overall atmosphere. Sunset Grille regularly hosts local musicians and entertainment throughout the week, giving the property a true waterfront beach-bar feel without losing the restaurant quality.

For visitors planning a full day at Little Harbor, there is plenty to do beyond dining. The resort area offers beach access, fishing charters, dolphin cruises, paddleboarding, kayaking, marina access, waterfront walking paths, and overnight accommodations. It is the kind of destination where you can easily turn lunch into an all-day experience. Families, couples, boaters, and tourists all seem to blend naturally into the relaxed atmosphere.

At the end of the day, what makes Sunset Bar & Grille at Little Harbor so enjoyable is the combination of scenery, atmosphere, and genuinely satisfying food. The fried green tomatoes were excellent, the fish tacos were packed with fresh coastal flavor, and the club sandwich was unexpectedly one of the best items on the menu. Add in panoramic views of Tampa Bay, sunsets over the water, distant cruise ships heading out toward the Gulf, and the skyline of downtown St. Petersburg glowing across the bay, and you have one of the most memorable casual dining experiences anywhere in the Tampa Bay area.
